WHYEVER?
Hues in Tubes… and how they made a name for themselves
Good morning, afternoon, evening my lovely subscribers,
I am sending you another (very short) post this week to squeeze in the info that, if you would like to participate in the next unfolding of this work, you will be able soon to join Lucy Mayes from @Londonpigment, Evie Hatch, @evie_hatch on Insta, and my good self for a pigmented conversation around some of the points and issues discussed in the book… an hour during which we will welcome your questions and comments, too, of course!

One hour in bed with Mona Lisa… and friends will be a sort of book club (in the sense that there is a reading support one can engage with before the session, and prepare questions, if so inclined), but we won’t assume you have actually read the material, and so introducing it before opening it to all three for discussion, then to all attendees. In fact, my book will be more of a springboard: the sections picked out, starting points for chatty, lively, loose but information-packed conversations around the issues/questions already outlined in the book…
These interactive sessions, organised by Pigments Revealed International, will happen three times a year, on Zoom, and if you have an interest, you can register here for the first one on the 23rd of May, 12pm PDT (you can convert time here… but, apologies to my Australian friends, unless you’re a real early bird, it’s not ideal for you.)
P.S.: If you wanted to ‘prepare’ for this one, please read this post
P.P.S.: I’ll send you a reminder the day before…
I sure hope to meet some of you ‘for real’, if on the screen!
Finally, before I close this section, I cannot resist but share a nut I didn’t crack (but would be most happy to hear if you have any leads.)
If someone mentioned opera to you and asked you to close your eyes and come up with an evocative colour, I’d have an educated guess that either gold or a deep carmine red might come to mind. Maybe I’m presuming on your imagination, but mine, at any rate, cannot go to hot pink! Opera Pink? How on earth did that happen? I rack my brains. Perhaps a Mrs Opera? Priscilla’s desert moment, train in the wind, Callas ablaze… hum.

But I did find two things that could, besides the paint, link those two words. A silent movie called “The Pink Opera Cloak” (I will spare you its ludicrous synopsis) and the 40th Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras celebrations of 2018, during which the organisers painted not the town red, not even with glitter (well, probably quite a fair bit) but the Sydney Opera… Pink!

That’s it for the origin of names on tubes… I hope you’ve enjoyed this unusal tour and will sometimes remember these crazy stories as you squeeze some luscious paint on your palette!
Onward to our final three sections…
(this has to end sometime!)
